Leonard Sweet, in his 2007 book, “The Gospel According to Starbucks®” says we don’t stand in line at Starbucks® just for a cup of coffee, it’s for the whole experience surrounding that cup.

Church coffee shops have been almost ubiquitous in the evangelical mega church community landscape for quite sometime. Today church run or sponsored coffee shops have crossed the line, though, from simply pop Christian culture to pervasive. Even smaller congregations are adding a coffee bar to their foyers right next to the “Welcome Desk”.

Why is that?

Coffee: The Social Lubricant

Coffee creates a sense warmth, of hope and trust you can hold in your hand

Coffee has become a hospitality ritual today. It is also a comfort food, if you will. So if you put the two together, one would surmise, coffee creates a sense warmth, of hope and trust you can hold in your hands. Let’s face it, for a real coffee lover, it doesn’t get much better than a warm cup of coffee in your hands to relax and rejuvenate your spirit almost anytime.

I remember when I was hiking a mountain in Costa Rica one weekend with fellow missionary language student friends. The hike was over 25 miles from 1500 feet to over 10,000 feet above sea level with a heavy pack. The last hour or so I was in a chilly drizzle on the muddy trail. Reaching the summit, I found a Park Ranger’s cabin to check in. Wet, cold and zonked I knocked on the door.

Entering I found the two rangers around a wood fed, iron stove. They immediately offered me great Costa Rican coffee (Is there anything else?). We sat around that stove for about 15 minutes, chatting and drinking coffee. I signed my paperwork, got the cabin key and left there smiling. The ten hours on the trail, the sore shoulders, the wet shoes, all had faded. I was alive again.

So take that image and transfer it to your church lobby on any given Sunday.

People enter, visitors and members alike. They’ve all been on their own trails of life for the past 6 days. Many are spiritually tired and wet.

Then they see the coffee shop. Today, as coffee shops (ala Starbucks) have become so pervasive in American culture, we have more or less, a society of coffee connoisseurs. Especially amongst the 18-34 demographic.

The fragrance of coffee is manifest and immediately the happy-zone bias of both visitors and members alike kicks in. Add a smiling barista, the subconsciously environmental resonate notes of milk being steamed for a latté, the visuals of fresh pastries even and we’re all in that Costa Rican cabin with those Park Rangers. The damp and chill of the week’s trail is forgotten. There is hope!

Coffee is a simile for sharing the Gospel!

Think of the coffee you provide as a suitable simile to the Gospel to both non-believers and believers when they enter your doors.

“The fragrance of coffee is manifest and immediately the happy-zone bias of both visitors and members alike kicks in.”

Standing or sitting people will gather where there is coffee. There is a common bond of communion among coffee drinkers. And lets face it, coffee is the most consumed beverage on the planet next to water. In its own way it’s kind of omnipresent It is also the most universally accepted beverage worldwide. It crosses cultural and ethnic barriers. I would even go so far as to say it crosses language barriers often.

Mark Batterson, Pastor at National Community Church in Washington D.C. puts it this way in a recent NY Times article:

“We felt like Jesus didn’t hang out at the synagogue, he hung out at wells,” he said. “Coffeehouses are postmodern wells. Let’s not wait for people to come to us, let’s go to them.”

I remember once as a pilot for MAF I had taken a jungle ministry group of national believers out to a remote Quechua village on the Ecuador/Peruvian border to show the Jesus film. We had stayed up, showing the film and answering questions and sharing the Gospel late into the night. Then it rained all night after we went to bed. Jungle rain: hard, heavy and loud. By the next AM we were all way out of our comfort zone being damp from the intense humidity and just a little tired.

The village spokesman knocked on our tent and offered breakfast mostly of fruit and some boiled fish caught in the nearby Amazon river tributary. But when I got to the table in the thatch roof kitchen, sitting on each banana leaf was a cheap plastic cup and a pack of Nescafé instant coffee. Wow! Just seeing it energized us all. I dumped the brown crystals into the waiting cup of boiled water and stirred. Holding up my cup of coffee, the village Chief across from me held his cup up and in a toast like fashion said in “Muy bueno. Sí?” (Very good. Yes?).

The coffee shop is just a friendly place to be these days.

Isn’t that how people should react to Jesus? He can make everything right when the dampness and chill of life is weighing us all down. His Spirit crosses all barriers. He is warmth and comfort. He brings hope and is our eternal basis of trust.

Coffee can be a simile for all this, a green light to ministry, an opportunity to share.

Need help setting up your coffee shop? Leverage our experience to your advantage. Put our ten years of very successful experience both in the retail coffee shop design and management world plus great custom roasted coffee to your advantage.

We would like to help you do this right. Too often we see churches get the concept but fail in the follow though.

As mentioned earlier, the prime demographic for coffee shop ministry is 18-34. Within that demographic you have a VERY sophisticated coffee consumer. There are certain basic expectations you need to understand and meet in your coffee shop ministry for it to be rich and rewarding experience for everyone.

Equipment costs, space layout, menu design, drink preparation, and even training are all areas we have helped many with over the years.

We can help in sourcing equipment

One of our current church clients today first called months ago, expressing their desire to start a church coffee shop. In fact the experienced Food Service Director of this large and established church had already begun pricing espresso machines. She was in “sticker-shock” when she called, having just been quoted $15,000 for a new espresso machine by an on-line retailer. We calmed her concerns and found her the perfect FAEMA machine, an industry standard, brand new and under warranty for around $4500. By the time they opened we had helped cut her initial budget by about 50%. That’s significant.

Add to that our exclusive training and design services and she will tell you, “I couldn’t have done this without you”. Here are her own words:

“We opened our Café 246 coffee shop last year and wanted a high quality coffee at a reasonable price but also a coffee company with a higher purpose and ideals than simply us selling coffee. What a tall order!

We found everything we were looking for and more in Coffee 4 Missions and Toomer’s Coffee Roasters.

It is outstanding coffee; our people love it and purchase bags to enjoy at home. The company/people are of the highest caliber, honest, and dependable; they will do whatever it takes to be sure we have what we need when we need it.

What I appreciate most is the help they gave us prior to opening our coffee service – they helped with design and layout, equipment procurement, lots of encouragement, training of our staff, and were on-site the day we opened!

You cannot go wrong purchasing coffee from this outstanding company- you will receive great coffee at a reasonable price and have a good feeling knowing you are helping to support missions… one cup at a time.”

In the end, all we ask is that you use our coffee because that’s what we’re about..great coffee for the Great Commission

But why wouldn’t you? It has been recognized in many publications including Southern Living Magazine. We use primarily Direct Trade coffees so you know you are being fiscally responsible in your purchases. And finally we are tithers ourselves from our business to world missions from the proceeds you would spend with us.

The rest, all of our services, are free.

God bless you in your desire to serve Him and be His witness!

Please call us at your convenience or contact us here to start a dialogue on your coffee shop ministry idea today!

We believe Coffee 4 Missions Church Coffee Fundraiser is the best church coffee fundraiser for churches for several reasons.

The primary reason is the SUPERIOR FLAVOR & TASTE EXPERIENCE of coffee your church will be buying for your fundraisers. It is truly Artisan grade.

Quite often and we all know this is true, products sold under the banner of “fundraisers” for schools, bands, churches and clubs are generally overpriced low quality products: popcorn, cheesecakes, taffy etc. Been there done that; haven’t you? We have. The products sold through many fundraisers are actually more of a bonus for a donation than anything else.

Consider this:

Our coffee was featured in Southern Living Magazine and our roaster (Toomer’s Coffee Roasters) recognized as being one of the top artisan coffee roasters in the region (October 2012). Here’s a link to the article.

We use the unsurpassed Infrared Roasting Method. Only 2% of all roasted coffees are produced using this method worldwide. Here is a widely searched, well cited and read article by our roastmaster on this method.

Stomach friendly: Our exclusive roasting method creates a natural low acidity in the coffee making it easier on everyone’s stomach.

This method also brings out the max aromatics from the bean.

Colleen Coble, noted author for Tyndale publishers, drinks our coffee exclusively and carries it around the world on her travels (most recently to Hawaii even, the land of Kona!) She writes:

“The infrared roasting brings out the full flavor of the bean, and it’s easier on my stomach. When I’m forced to drink coffee away from home, I can tell the difference. Nothing else is as smooth and mellow with the full flavor. I order plenty and take it with me when I’m traveling away from home. I’ve even mentioned it in my books because I want everyone to get a chance to taste it. Once you try Toomer’s, you won’t want to drink anything else!”

Colleen Coble
Author

Another reason is the quality and freshness of the fundraiser coffee you are selling

We buy only premium grade, DIRECT TRADE Arabica beans through one of the nations most well established and principled brokers. We then roast your coffee TO ORDER. Your coffee will ship within 48 hours of the roast, heat sealed in a valved bag to ensure it’s freshness until you customers open it the first time.

Don’t forget: Affordably priced

Your fundraiser can be a a simple direct marketing campaign within your church and community using our GO ROAST BLEND BOX. This can generate a 100% profit easily. You can also add or mix several other options to boost sales or make your fundraiser an on-going program for a specific ministry the church supports (see the graphic below).

Finally, and more importantly, it’s the big picture purpose behind every bag of coffee you sell in your church coffee fundraiser

Yes you are doing good with your profits from the sales. But we dedicate a significant profit tithe from our sales also to missions ourselves! That was the genesis mission statement behind Coffee 4 Missions from the outset nearly 5 years ago. As we say: Great Coffee supporting the Great Commission.

How do you get started?

Here is a great graphic that breaks the options down into 4 possible ways your church fundraiser can happen. Starting with our basic Go Roast Blend Box of 100 bags all the way up to your own Church sponsored coffee shop. Check it out!

The church’s problem is not a lack of resources but rather a casual attitude to church life that accepts second best as good enough for God, says J John.

Not all church coffee is bad, but the issue that poor church coffee raises is deeper and more troubling. It is that much of what we do as churches can often be described as substandard, second best, mediocre or weak. We’ve all come across signs of slackness in church life: heating systems so dilapidated that the congregation keep their gloves on in winter, PA systems held together by insulating tape and notice boards still advertising Christmas services in February; ministers who are underpaid, live in crumbling, damp houses and drive cars that barely pass their MOTs; music groups that don’t know how many verses to play and church websites that crash when you click on them.I’m not criticising poverty in churches. There are many small congregations where few people are employed yet they somehow manage to do the very best with limited resources and many people serving voluntary. And I’m not complaining about ministers who, through lack of resources, have to do more than anyone ought reasonably to expect. What I’m concerned about is a casual attitude to church life that accepts second best as good enough for God. This can happen in any church but is particularly troubling in churches with wealthy members who seek quality and excellence in every other area of their lives.

Why do we have a quality problem?

· In some Christian circles there is still a belief that nothing should be enjoyable, especially church. Anything that smacks of pleasure is viewed with suspicion. In this perverse view there is virtue in hard pews, out-of-tune instruments and rambling sermons. Such things – ¬and poor coffee – are supposedly good for the soul!

· There is an undervaluing of the local church. For nearly 2000 years Christians have prized their local church, but today the local church is no longer automatically high on a Christian’s priorities. There are even some who consider the local church to be irrelevant and dispensable.

· There may also be a particularly British aspect to this malaise in church life. As a nation we celebrate amateurism and informality. American churches are less prone to this, although they may suffer from the opposite temptation, aspiring to a professionalism that can produce professional organisations more akin to businesses.

Why should we pursue excellence?

· We worship a God who demonstrates excellence in all he does. He created the entire universe and then made that simplest and most satisfying of quality control statements: what he had made was good (Genesis 1). When faced with solving the problem of a human race that had rebelled against him, he chose the most costly of solutions: sacrificing his only Son.

· We serve a God who commands excellence. We may struggle with those portions of the Old Testament that talk about the details of the sacrifices and the furnishings of the temple. But what is clear is that to be one of God’s people in Old Testament times required enthusiasm, expense and commitment. God’s people were to ensure that the temple in Jerusalem was grand and beautiful. And as we pass into the New Testament, the spirit in which we are to worship God does not alter. God’s most excellent grace demands a response of equal excellence.

· We live among people who expect excellence. If you are reading this you are probably already convinced about the need for mission. Anything less than excellence undermines that message. People are not persuaded to accept Jesus by polished, well-done services, let alone a decent cup of coffee. God has done astonishing things in the shabbiest of churches and he can do so again. But if we talk of something that we claim is of life-changing importance and our actions reflect complacency and a careless attitude then people are going to sense a mismatch. The Holy Spirit can speak through anything but it’s presumption to rely on this. To offer people words and worship of quality (and perhaps some decent coffee as well) is to make a statement that we value both our faith and them.

Excellence is not achieved easily; it requires at least three things: time, money and effort. And this is why excellence is an endangered species in some churches.

· Time. Success does not occur instantly. Excellence takes time. We all know that time is the most precious commodity we have. The result is that we end up begrudging that hour cleaning the church (I have visited some disgustingly filthy toilets in churches on my travels!), the midweek rehearsing with the music group, arriving early to set up that good coffee and be well prepared for all the children’s activities. But as Christians we need to remind ourselves that we have eternal life. Let’s not begrudge a few hours on earth.

· Money. Excellence costs and we prefer to keep our money to ourselves. Yet nothing is a better barometer of our spiritual health than our giving. To sing about dedication and devotion and the wonder of what God has done for us and then to give almost nothing in response doesn’t demonstrate a living faith. If God gave himself for us in Christ then we who are saved by his life and death ought to respond with generosity.

Money isn’t everything; it is just one of the three elements. Nevertheless it is important and many of the problems I have described are attributable to a shortage of funding.

· Effort. Talk to an excellent musician, artist or writer and you will find that their mastery involved hard work, sacrifice and struggle. We need to adopt the same principle. What we do in our local churches is probably the most important part of our Christian lives. We come together in worship and fellowship as communities of people to offer praise to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and to be taught by him. We need to work to make that time the very best that it can possibly be. We need to put more effort in, to get more excellence out.

Ultimately, the weaknesses in our churches and organisations have a common root: the fact that we do not value our faith as we should. What we believe, and in particular what we believe about our local church, has ceased to become the central point around which our lives are built. It has gone from being a foundation of our lives to some sort of accessory and we need to adopt a very different mindset.

That we have poor coffee in our church is the most trivial of matters, yet I believe it is often a symptom of something very serious. It is too easy for us to be substandard in what we do for God. Friends, let us resolve to pursue excellence for the glory of God.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5,6

Some days, sometimes many days, I can start to see my life as just a box of parts without instructions on how it all goes together.

I remember when I was applying to Moody Bible Institute’s flight school, Moody Aviation back in the late 80′s, they had what was called Evaluation Week. The purpose of the this week was to challenge you as a prospective student and see how you performed. If you passed you were offered a slot in the upcoming class of Missionary Pilot or Mechanic wanna-be’s. We were challenged spiritually as well as mechanically.

A lot of the spiritual challenges came one-on-one with Moody staff who would casually ask questions like, “If you don’t get chosen to come into the next class, what will be your view of God?” followed by “Would you still pursue serving Him?” or “Are you more concerned about being a pilot or serving Jesus?”

The mechanical challenges were just as daunting.

One day I was scheduled into one of the aviation maintenance labs for a one hour session. When I got there a staff instructor smiled and handed me a box of parts. No instructions. Just a box of parts with the objective as follows: “You have 30 minutes. Figure out how this all goes together and put it together. You have a tool box by your work bench over there with all the tools you will need. Good luck.” With that he left.

Hmmmm. What was it? I had no clue. A few shafts with some gears, miscellaneous screws, a big magnet, two halves of what appeared to be a case, as so on.

So I began placing this part and then that one together until they looked like right and after about 20 minutes whatever it was looked to be back together. The shaft turned, something clicked, and best of all there were no parts left in the box.

The instructor returned and smiled, “Good job! Excellent!” I felt good. Then he asked, “What is it?”

I had no idea.

He explained it was a magneto, one of the oldest mechanical engine ignition devices known to man. “Been around since the turn of the century” he explained.

I nodded with a pursed smile. “So?” I thought to myself, being happy to have just completed the task…or so I thought.

He continued, “Well, the job’s only half done. To make it work now you need to ‘time’ it.” With that he reached under the work bench and tossed a massive 4 inch thick technical manual on the table top and said, “Instructions are in here. I’ll be back in 10 minutes.”

Yet as formidable as the problem seemed, I looked at the magneto I had assembled [based on the obvious association of each part to one another] then opened the manual and looked for the word “timing” in the index. There it was.

I had no clue really what a magneto was, but using some common sense and an instruction manual written by people with superior knowledge to me I was able to actually “time” the magneto.

That’s how our walk with God is.

Somedays, many days, we all feel as though God has just handed us a box of parts without instructions and said “Get it done”. And like me that day at Moody Aviation, often we have enough common sense to put the obvious pieces together, but then what? We can lose our momentum and confidence quickly.

But when you pull out the manual, God’s Word, even when you don’t know what you have it tells you how to make it work. Why? God has superior knowledge, it’s called omniscience. He knows everything and He gave us a manual. After all He designed and created it. Right?

Pull out God’s Word today. He’ll show you how to “time” your life!

I first met Renaldo and his wife, Blanca, as a pilot for Mission Aviation Fellowship in the mid 90′s. I, along with my family, was a missionary pilot with MAF, serving in the eastern jungles of Ecuador (called there the “Oriente”).

Our base was located in Shell, Ecuador, made famous by the ministry of several men in the 1950′s who were martryd in a savage attack on a sandy spit of sand called Palm Beach on the Currarí River by a group of indigenous people then known as the Auca Indians. Today they are know as the Waorani (aka Huaorani)

These five missionaries were Nate Saint (MAF), Jim Elliot, Roger Youderian, Pete Flemming and Ed McCully. The event became known as Operation Auca

Here is a link to a thorough article on the event.

So now fast forward to the mid 1990′s

Renaildo, Blanca and there small son, Michael had moved to Shell a year or so after we arrived in 1995 working under the organizational umbrella of a North American Missionary, Lloyd Rogers. Lloyd had staked out the jungles of Ecuador for God back in the 1960′s and was so well thought of by the Ecuadorians and Indian populations alike, that at one point they nominated him for Provincial Governor. That tells you a lot.

Renaldo was one of Lloyd’s shining stars, working with the Waorani principally. However he shared with the pilots one day during a prayer circle before that day’s flying began, that he was sensing God’s call to establish a Bible Institute among the Waorani Indians actually in the jungle. He said his concern was that they had become to comfortable with the missionaries doing the heavy lifting. He had challenged the “Wao” leadership to consider their responsibility to evangelize their own people. Going further, he said he believed they needed to get accustomed to doing it without the use of the MAF airplane as much as possible.

The seed for the Waorani Bible Institute was born

Over the next several years MAF donated flights to carry in materials, supplies and even carpenters to help in the construction of the “Instituto Biblica”. I personally flew the Bernals in and out over the course of building the Institute many hours. Both Trish and I became very fond of the Bernals. Their son, Michael loved airplanes and said one day he might want to become an MAF pilot.

Whenever I flew them, I would always let Michael ride in the “co-piloto’s” seat. Since all the MAF pilots wore helmets, one day they showed up for a flight to the jungle and Michael had his own little helmet and a pair of cheap sunglasses for the flight. His parents had found it all at a small store somewhere and with their meager missionary income purchased them for him to wear on their flights.

Trish then had the idea, “He needs a pilot shirt too!” So she found a small blue shirt and material to make epaulets with gold bars. The day we gave it to Michael he freaked!

Eventually the Instituto was finished and I was asked to be MAF’s representative at the dedication ceremony. The day was very rainy when Trish and I, along with another MAF family, took off in our Cesssna 206G for the village of Daimontaro where the new institute was.

Arriving over head the strip was very wet but workable. We landed and the next four hours included a feast, lots of singing, preaching (in Waorani, so I didn’t get much of it ) then with the 100 or so people gathered there joining hands around the main buildings to pray. I along with several others was honored to be asked to pray over the Instituto.

Since that day the Instituto has been a success

The goal is to have the Wao Bible Institute students walk to the school and not rely on the MAF plane as much as possible. Going further graduates are encouraged to then travel by foot village to village sharing the Gospel and building up believers in the rainforest.

To many it is a surprise that the Waorani as a group are not more thoroughly Christian. In fact since the 1950′s the percentage of Wao believers dwindled year after year. That is changing today though.

Since the Bernals began to work with the Waorani exclusively and the Waorani Bible Institute has been established the Christian message alive an well these days in the jungles of Ecuador.

Since returning to the US in 2002 to continue with MAF as the Eastern US Recruiter Trish and I have continued our support of the Bernals through their US affiliate, Ecuadorian Harvest Ministries. EHM collects and distributes funds collected in the US for the Bernals and their work and does not take out any administration fees. We see that as selfless and benevolent conduct in a day when most non-profits in the US take out extraordinary “admin fees” to pay salaried staff.

The Bernal family is dedicated and have always put God first in every decision. Reinaldo and Blanca are two of the Godliest people we know and count it a pleasure to be able to be able to continue to be a part of their support through Coffee 4 Missions.

If you would like to find out more and possible support this great ministry with us here is a good link to Ecuadorian Harvest Ministries with contact info, income and financial data.
Affiliate marketing is a simple way for your church or organization to link up with a great brand and earn instant “Great Commissions” for great causes. All you need is your own website.

Once approved you simply place our affiliate logo on your website and link it to our e-store using your unique ID code we generate. Each time someone clicks on the link they’re taken to our store where they order whatever coffee they care to. The shopping cart software then logs their sale which is tied to your unique ID code in the link on your website [where they initially clicked]. You just earned a commission!

At the end of the month (or whatever reporting period we agree works best for you: bi-monthly, quarterly, etc) you get a print-out of your sales and a “Great Commission Check”. It’s that simple. Really.

You need to promote the link through your newsletter, posters, and make the affiliate marketing program prominent on your website.

We suggest even devoting a page detailing the cause or program it is supporting to help your get congregation, organization or web audience on board. (Click on image to the left to enlarge)

Step one is let us know you’re interested & want to get started! We’ll do the rest.

Starting or setting up a church run coffee shop or café is becoming standard fare in today’s churches across America. Why is that?

Church Cafés are popular and draw crowds. No doubt about that. If you’re taking the plunge though, do it right!

First consider the fact that coffee is the most highly consumed beverage on the planet next to water. Second, it is universally accepted (unlike beer or wine) within the Christian community. Finally, let’s not forget the sense of community and fellowship it generates as people hold a warm cup and have their spirits lifted in fellowship with one another.

Bottom line: Coffee shops foster positive energy and atmosphere. And that’s a good thing today! We could all use a bit more of that. Right?

We have been in this business nearly ten years and have helped any number of churches and shops set up their cafés. Obviously we would like you to do business with Coffee 4 Missions, but we would also like to make sure you do it right.

That being said, consider this basic HOW TO GUIDE our gift to you, no strings attached. That’s how we operate. We figure you will start to see how we operate and consider us as you look to open your church coffee shop or café.

The most important question you absolutely have to answer is: Will we charge for our coffee or give it away?

There isn’t a correct answer here. It’s unique to your congregation’s needs, the goals of the café, and possibly your congregational view about conducting a selling environment within the four walls of the church. There is no one right answer. So think about this and get everyone on board whatever model you choose.

CONSIDERATIONS RELATED TO THE PROFIT MODEL:

Profits can be used to fund specific ministries, mission outreach, or fund special projects.

Can provide employment for church staff, college & high school students.

It pays for itself, so it is never a drag on the budget.

Off campus church run coffee shops are a great neutral territory for sharing the Gospel message using a stair-step method:

Provide a great product

Do it with a smile/great customer service

Be consistent

People will notice: “There’s just something different here”.

Clients will start to ask questions opening the door for sharing Jesus.

Shops that sell can more easily afford to carry better products: better coffee, better smoothie mixes, etc.
.

FACT: The day when you can open a for-profit coffee shop and sell mediocre coffee or just grocery store grade coffees are gone. People no longer visit coffee shops out of curiosity, innocent of what to expect. You have a very educated coffee shop clientele out there today.

CONSIDERATIONS RELATED TO THE NON-PROFIT MODEL:

Great first impression possibly to visitors if the coffee is front and center on Sunday AM’s. Just offering a warm cup of anything is inviting.

Anytime there is a coffee or tea readily available, people will gather around the serving area and talk. That’s called fellowship. And that is good.

Being free it will now have to be part of the budget and will not pay for itself. It’s an expense.

Being an expense you have to decide whether you want to provide a good grade of coffee or food service grade coffee.
.

FACT: Our experience has been that churches who have switched to our coffee even in the FREE COFFEE MODEL [from hotel or food service grade coffee] immediately notice how few half empty cups they have to pick up and collect after Sunday services and how little un-used coffee is dumped out. In fact their coffee consumption actually goes up some. But when you weigh that against what was thrown away and dumped out before, it’s probably a wash.

The next thing to consider is the build out: The #1 mistake most new coffee shops make is over-spending on the build out.

Coffee shops use a lot of the same items found in a restaurant like ice makers, 3 compartment sinks, under counter refrigerators, blenders and so on.

We recommend buying NEW on espresso machines. We can get you the best prices on the better, time tested machines out there.

When you can it is advisable to buy USED. Good, used commercial grade equipment holds up well over time. Used can be a few months old or a few years old, but the pricing will be all the about same. Expect to pay about 20-30% of new price for good used equipment. We can guide you on this and have one broker we like to deal with who is a Christian businessman. Whether from him or another source we can often find you what you need for the fairest/best price based on quality. In the end: We know what we are looking at and what it’s really worth. We’re a great resource.

We have a long list of items we recommend to our clients to buy used and a rough guestimate of prices for planning purposes. Talk to us about that.

However, we generally do not recommend buying espresso machines used. There are several reasons.

First the boom in coffee shop growth has led to a lot of sub-standard quality espresso machines being available. They may look pretty and shiny, but inside you often find cheap plumbing, construction & electrical parts and just poor design. Your espresso machine is the center of your coffee shop universe so you’d best make it a good one.

Second, you have no idea if it was set-up, operated and maintained properly. In our retail shops and those of our clients we recommend daily cleaning of the system with an approved cleaner. Daily or after each use cycle! Also you need to make sure your espresso machine is supplied water that was filtered and MOST IMPORTANLY passed through a water softener system before entering the espresso machine.

You really don’t save that much buyingh a used espresso machine. Repairs are expensive, Part s are expensive. A new machine comes with a warranty and service is included for up to year most times. Plus you can set it up correctly, maintain it correctly and be assured of years of trouble free service from it if new. We have connections with several wholesalers and can get you the best prices on these as well within the sphere of machines we know hold up the best (FAEMA, ASTORIA, et al).

When you buy a used unit, sitting in a warehouse, or someones garage, you have no idea if any of this has occurred (even if it is a name brand we would recommend).

Finally sell good quality products.

This probably should be number one.

I say that because I am thinking of instances where shops were properly capitalized, used good equipment, but chose to go with downright cheap coffee and/or other products. They are all out of business now. For example, we actually saw one local owner loading a cart at the local Big Box Membership Store with their store brand of coffee. Yet he was still charging like it was an artisan grade coffee. This didn’t fool their clientele for long. They can get that at the gas station free with a greasy sausage biscuit.

Our coffees are sourced from the best regions through the most reputable agencies and roasted to bring out their full flavor and goodness. We use the infrared roasting method which is superior to all other methods. Couple the two characteristics together and you have a winning combination that will keep clients returning again and again and keep you profitable.

Contact us today to help you get started

We have many years of experience, industry knowledge and a network of suppliers that can offer you the best pricing for whatever your needs are.

Mary Lou Herald, Food Service Director at Whitesburg Baptist Church says this about us:

We opened our Café 246 coffee shop last year and wanted a high quality coffee at a reasonable price but also a coffee company with a higher purpose and ideals than simply us selling coffee.

We look forward to hearing from you soon!

God’s blessings!

There is a record of your activity on your PC, laptop, iPad, iPhone, whatever. Everything you’ve downloaded, looked at, listened to, forwarded, copied…everything. It’s called the “Cache”.

Your cache stores everything you look at primarily so that the second, third, or umpteenth time you return to that site, it can load faster. A lot of the weighty digital data that is slower loading is already there on your computer waiting, pre-loaded if you will. Innocent enough. Right?

Well, ever ended up on a questionable website accidentally? Or maybe it wasn’t such an innocent act. It doesn’t matter: it’s there. Everything is there, the good the bad…the ugly.

What’s in your cache? These are the things you keep hidden from everyone. If someone were to look at your browser history would you be embarrassed? Would it be a Ricky & Lucy moment: “You got some splainin’ to do Lucy!” ?

Truth is we all probably have something in our cache, innocently or not so innocently stored.

Before you start either feeling a little boastful about your internet holiness or utterly despondent about your bad habits, let me break it to you: we all have a cache full of stuff ugly to God. Everyone. It’s called sin.

We were born with it. Can’t do nothing about that. Sorry.

However we have a hope. Jesus came to clear our cache permanently.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:16

Think about this today. You don’t have to explain anything to Jesus. Just acknowledge your condition, ask forgiveness and accept His free gift. Let Him clean your cache out forever.

Then start living your life for Him! ST

When my wife and I first started raising support as missionaries to go overseas with MAF, the Short Term Missions Trip phenomenon was just getting underway. That was 1993 or so.

Since that time many ministries have developed a business plan [if you will] around the concept. In short SHORT TERM MISSIONS is mainstream. However absolutely it should not dilute the local churches giving to support their full-time field missionary staff.

We believe, based on our experience, that short terms missions trips should be a stand-alone, self supporting ministry. After all, if the idea is to get people to consider God’s call [on them] as full-time missionaries, they should learn early on “our God is a mighty God” and start learning, hands on, He can provide.

At Coffee 4 Missions we have a multi-option program that has three tenets the program is built upon, each of which can be assimilated into your program for fundraising and supporting this form of ministry.

Each concept (1) involves YOU making the basic effort of letting your constituents know (2) THERE IS A NEED then (3) allowing the Holy Spirit room [He requires] to do His thing…move on the hearts of your potential supporters. It works.
